China's top legislator ends visit to Australia

Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo left Canberra for New Zealand on Wednesday morning after a seven-day official visit to Australia.

During his visit, Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, held talks with Australian federal and local leaders including Governor-General Michael Jeffery, Prime Minister John Howard, President of the Senate Paul Calvert, Speaker of the House of Representatives David Hawker and Federal Opposition Leader Kim Beazley.

During their discussions, leaders of the two countries agreed to further strengthen bilateral relationship, particularly in economic and trade areas.

Wu also visited Perth, capital of the state of Western Australia, Cairns of Queensland and Sydney, capital of New South Wales, during his stay in Australia.

Australia is the second leg of Wu's four-nation Asia-Pacific tour, which will also take him to New Zealand and Malaysia. He has visited Singapore before Australia.
