Lien Chan not to run for another term of KMT chairman: spokesperson

A spokesperson of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) said Wednesday that KMT Chairman Lien Chan will not run for another term as chairman, according to Taiwan-based media.

The announcement was made after the meeting of the central body of the Chinese KMT.

Lien was quoted as saying that he hoped those who are running for the chairmanship give their proposals on the future development of the Chinese KMT. So far, none of the candidates have given their opinions on the issue. Lien will transfer his position to the new chairman elected in July.

According to local media reports, some have urged Lien to change his mind and run for a new term. Some believe that Lien's leadership prevents the Chinese KMT from splitting.

The Chinese KMT was founded by Sun Yat-sen in the early 20th century and got its present name in 1912. On Dec. 11, 1949, the central body of the Chinese KMT moved to Taiwan Province. Lien became its acting chairman in March of 2000, after the party lost Taiwan's elections. He was elected the chairman twice, first in June of 2000 and then March of 2001.
