Donald Tsang, acting chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and chief secretary for administration of the SAR government, announced Wednesday he had tendered resignation in view of his intention to run for the chief executive election, according to Central Government sources.
The sources quoted Tsang as saying that his request for resignation from the position as chief secretary for administration had been submitted to the State Council for consideration Wednesday afternoon and that he would proceed on leave thereafter and prepare to run for the election.
According to the provisions of the regulations on the chief executive election in the Hong Kong SAR, Tsang must resign his current position as the chief secretary for administration before running for the chief executive election.
In accordance with the relevant provisions of the Basic Law, Hong Kong Financial Secretary Henry Tang will become the Acting Chief Executive when Tsang proceeds on leave.
