Armed robbers injure bodyguard of Mozambican president's daughter
font size

Maputo police have arrested three suspects believed to be responsible for an attack on a snack bar last Friday, in which a bodyguard of one of the daughters of Mozambican President Armando Guebuza was seriously injured, local media reported on Wednesday.

The local media said it is not clear whether the gang targeted the President's daughter, perhaps intending to kidnap her, or whether she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The police launched a major manhunt, including mounting checkpoints on all roads in and out of Maputo, shortly after the shooting took place. They also checked all health units, and even residences of traditional healers - since one of the gang was known to have been shot by the injured bodyguard.

The police said the three, whose names have not been revealed, were arrested in an outlying Maputo suburb on Sunday night. The gang was using a car believed to have been stolen from a customs official.

The bodyguard is also in intensive care, though his condition is said to be improving.
