Uruguay is urging the United Nations, the United States and Japan to honor the payment of millions of dollars to its peacekeeping missions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Haiti.
Defense Minister Azucena Berruti told the congress that the UN owes seven months of payment to the Uruguayan peacekeeping mission deployed in the DRC, local press reported Wednesday.
The overdue 28 million US dollars include 15 million dollars intraveling expenses and 13 million dollars for equipment, Berruti was quoted as saying.
Uruguay has contributed 1,600 troops to the UN mission in the DRC, or MONUC, since 2000.
The United States and Japan are also supposed to finance the mission, but neither has fulfilled the obligations, Berruti added.
In Haiti where Uruguay, alongside Argentina, Brazil and Chile, is part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission for Haiti (MINUSTAH), the world body delayed two months of payment of 1.5 million dollars, said Berruti.
