Andy Roddick's Paris challenge ended by Argentina's Acasuso

American second seed Andy Roddick wilted under the dual assault of a fierce Paris sun and the uncompromising baseline attack of Argentina's Jose Acasuso to crash out of the French Open.

The 22-year-old Roddick, who has never got beyond the third round in Roland Garros in five attempts, was in control of his second round match against the gritty 62nd ranked player coasting at two sets to love ahead.

But Acasuso overcame treatment to his injured left leg to carve out a 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 8-6 win in 3hr 21min to move into the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time where he will face Filippo Volandri of Italy.

The defeat was Roddick's second consecutive defeat at this stage having also lost in five sets to France's Olivier Mutis in 2004.

It also meant that for the second year in a row there will be no American in the third round of the men's singles.

American misery was completed on Thursday when Vince Spadea was forced to abandon his match with Germany's Tommy Haas because of stomach cramps when he was trailing 6-4, 6-3.

James Blake also surrendered a two-set lead to lose to Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka 6-7 (9/11), 5-7, 6-1, 6-3, 6-4.

Russian third seed Marat Safin reached the third round with a 6-7 (6/8), 6-3, 7-5, 6-1 win over Czech qualifier Lukas Dlouhy and will face Juan Carlos Ferrero, the 2003 champion, for a place in the fourth round.

Ferrero, the Spanish 32nd seed, reached the third round with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 win over the Czech Republic's Jan Hernych.

Meanwhile, Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova and eternal French hope Amelie Mauresmo eased into the third round.

Second seed Sharapova saw off French wildcard Aravane Rezai 6-3, 6-2, and now faces fellow Russian Anna Chakvetadze.

Mauresmo, the third seed, edged 15-year-old compatriot Alize Cornet 6-0, 6-2 and now takes on Serbia and Montenegro's Ana Ivanovic for a place in the fourth round.

Justine Henin-Hardenne and Guillermo Coria, who endured miserable appearances at the 2004 French Open, also moved into the third round.

Henin-Hardenne, who as defending champion crashed out in the second round in 2004, made the third round of the women's singles with a confident 6-1, 6-4 win over 31-year-old Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual.

She now faces another Spaniard, Anabel Medina Garrigues.

The eighth-seed Coria progressed when his Serbia and Montenegro opponent Novak Djokovic was forced to retire with breathing difficulties while the Argentinian was leading 4-6, 6-2, 3-2.

Coria faces Austria's Jurgen Melzer in the next round.

Russia's 29th seed Mikhail Youzhny was knocked out, losing to Melzer 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7/5) while David Sanchez, who put out triple champion Gustavo Kuerten in the first round, saw off former Australian Open winner Thomas Johansson, the 19th seeded Swede, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4.
