UN special envoy for tsunami recovery and former US President Bill Clinton said he will help tsunami survivors in southern India find export markets for their handicraft products and involve himself more in the region's rebuilding efforts.

Clinton flew 300 kilometres south to Nagapattinam, over a coastline ravaged in the December 26th tsunami, to meet local farmers and fishing families.

After hearing stories of survival in Nagapattinam district, where most tsunami deaths in India occurred, he promised to do what he can for rebuilding the region.

"If we can get enough demand for the products they are producing, then we will have enough jobs for everybody and more importantly, the income of this area will go up dramatically and they'll have better houses and be able to start a process where they will take more control of their futures."

Nearly 7,000 people died in Nagapattinam, when the tsunami struck its coast.

K. Parameshwaran and his wife lost three children and seven relatives to the deadly waves.

"Clinton can also carry the message from us to all over the world, even loss of three children and seven of family members, even in this situation there are people surviving and giving their life to others."

Parameshwaran is now involved in social work for the rehabilitation of tsunami survivors and hopes that his story will inspire many others to channel their grief into helping other victims.

Clinton also met local officials, discussing his own role and that of the United Nations in future rebuilding efforts.
