Restrictive measures on China's textile exports groundless: Commerce Minister
font size

Chinese Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai said on Monday in Beijing that the restrictive measures taken by the United States and the European Union on China's textile exports were "groundless".

Addressing a press conference hosted by the Information Office of the State Council, Bo said that the US and EU had failed to meet the preconditions required by Article 242 in the documents concerning China's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO), which allows WTO members to impose limits on certain types of China-originated clothing.

"The US and EU are liable to provide solid evidence to prove both a surge in their imports of China-made textile products and a market disruption resulted from such an import surge," Bo said.

Moreover, he said, the US and EU should first consult with China and provide detailed explanations before taking any restrictive measures.
