China, Japan agree to resolve East China Sea disputes thru dialogue
font size

China and Japan agreed to resolve the East China Sea dispute through dialogue and consultations following a new round of two-day talks in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said Tuesday.

Kong made the remark at a routine press conference Tuesday afternoon. He said that both sides stated their views and positions and voiced their concerns over the issue during the consultation.

They both agreed to implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries during their meeting in Jakarta and had an in-depth exchange of views on launching negotiation about the demarcation of the continental shelf of the East China Sea and promoting the joint development of the marine resource in the area, Kong said.

According to the spokesman, the consultation was presided over by Chinese Foreign Ministry's Asian Department Director Cui Tiankai and his Japanese counterpart Kenichiro Sasae, director-general for Japanese Foreign Ministry's Asian and Oceanic Affairs Bureau. Both sides agreed to hold the third round of talks in Tokyo in the near future.
