Fifth National Congress of the Chinese Young Pioneers opens

A total of 790 delegates attended the Fifth National Congress of the Chinese Young Pioneers which opened in the Great Hall of the People in central Beijing Wednesday, International Children's Day.

The Chinese Young Pioneers is the organization of Chinese children. It was founded by the Communist Party of China in 1950 and run by the Communist Youth League. It recruits all children between 7 and 14. There are 130 million young pioneers in China.

Top leaders Hu Jintao, Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Zeng Qinghong, Huang Ju, Wu Guanzheng, Li Changchun, Luo Gan met with the delegates before the opening of the congress, expressing their congratulations and extending greetings to the children all over the country.
