CPC Political Bureau meeting on ethnic affairsThe Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee met Tuesday to study and arrange the work on ethnic affairs and acceleration of economic and social development of ethnic minorities and minority areas. General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Hu Jintao presided over the meeting, which discussed a resolution on the issue. The meeting highlighted the importance of the work, saying it has a bearing on the general situation of the party's and the state's undertakings. The meeting called for concentrating the wisdom and strength of people of all ethnic groups onto the building of a moderately prosperous society, the building of socialism with China's own characteristics and the rejuvenation of the Chinese Nation. Development is the fundamental way to resolve ethnic problems in China at the present stage, it noted. The meeting called for greater efforts to develop minority areas in the fields of culture, education, science and technology and public health. It also urged the recruitment of more cadres and professionals from ethnic minorities. The Political Bureau reiterated that the regional autonomy in minority areas is a fundamental political system which must be enforced consistently. It called for increasing the great solidarity among all ethnic groups, firmly safeguarding social stability and unity of the country, and promoting the building of a harmonious socialist society.
