The Dutch referendum on Wednesday rejected the European Union (EU) Constitution with 63 percent of the voters said "no" to the EU's first constitutional charter, Dutch TV NOS reported immediately after the voting ends at 21:00 pm local time (GMT 19:00).
The overwhelming "no" has made the Netherlands the second founding EU member state to reject the EU charter, following a French "no" on Sunday.
According to NOS, the turnout of the referendum is 62 percent, far above the bottom line of 30 percent the Dutch congress has set for "honoring the public advice" in ratifying the charter.
The referendum, the first in the Dutch history, is no legally binding. The Dutch congress has the final say in ratifying the constitution, but all political parties within the congress have agreed to "honor the public advice" if the turnout of the referendum is above 30 percent.
