Donald Tsang said in Hong Kong Thursday that he was informed by the Hong Kong Special Administration Region (HKSAR) government that the State Council had approved his resignation as HK Chief Secretary for Administration and that his campaign for the Chief Executive election has formally started.

He made the remarks at a press conference on Thursday.

He said he would formally meet the press to announce his ideas and guidelines for election work on Thursday afternoon.

The State Council approved the Tsang's resignation on Wednesday and he left the post the same day.

In line with the Basic Law of the HKSAR, Tsang also left the post of acting chief executive when he resigned as chief secretary for administration.
