China, emerging power in driving world security: expertsChina plays a positive role and acts as an emerging power in driving world peace and security, experts on military and security issues said in Beijing Thursday. Li Wei, an expert in war on terror with the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, told Xinhua at an international symposium on security issues that all countries should cooperate in coping with threats from non-traditional threats, such as terrorism, transnational crimes and infectious disease. "China plays an important role in promoting such cooperation," he said. Within the United Nations framework, Li said, China, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, is devoted to safeguarding world peace. Regionally, China fights terrorism and enhances political and economic exchanges with other countries by taking an active part in regional organizations such as the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation, the Shanghai Cooperation Forum and the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Regional Forum. China always pursues a foreign policy of peace and resolves disputes through dialogue and negotiation, Li said, noting that all these practices indicate China's indubitable contribution to world peace and stability. "China's role in safeguarding international security is important and effective," said Khan Nasrullah, Pakistani brigadier general. He said that by pursuing peaceful relations with all other countries and providing help and support to developing countries, China brings balance to the world order. "To cope with security threats, China is playing a positive role now and will be an emerging power to play bigger role in future," said another Pakistani Brigadier General Mumtaz Bajwa. During the two-day symposium sponsored by the National Defense University, a total of 86 senior military officers from 63 countries and some experts on security studies will exchange views on regional and international security issues to seek solutions for coping with security challenges.
