One of the Nepalese peacekeepers who took part in the operation in Ituri of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), has died of his wounds, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Friday.
The peacekeeper had been leading the evacuation of troops who'd come under fire while providing security for a human rights verification team, the spokesman said.
In Burundi, a South African peacekeeper was shot in the head on Friday while monitoring the conduct of elections near a polling station there, Dujarric said, adding that the soldier is in a critical condition.
Meanwhile, two Sri Lankan peacekeepers in Haiti were wounded on Thursday when the armored personnel carrier they were traveling on came under fire, and both soldiers are said to be out of danger, he noted.
Unknown gunmen fired on UN helicopters Thursday in the DRC, wounding four peacekeepers and partly damaging one of the choppers.
