US President George W. Bush called his Georgian counterpart Mikhail Saakashvili on Friday and congratulated him for reaching an agreement with Moscow on the closure of Russian military bases in Georgia.
"The president called to congratulate president Saakashvili on reaching agreement with Moscow on Russia withdrawing its forces from military bases in Georgia," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.
"The two leaders agreed on the importance of Georgia and Russia working together in a constructive way to move forward on the agreement and to advance cooperation on the peaceful resolution of Georgia's separatist conflicts," the spokesman said.
Russia and Georgia agreed on May 30 that Russian would complete the closure of its two military bases in Georgia during 2008, resolving one of the most serious disputes between the two former soviet countries.
Georgian President Saakashvili has strongly demanded Russia to withdraw out of the military bases in Georgia.
