Six suspected coup plotters arrested in Ghana
font size

Six persons suspected to be involved in acts of subversion have been arrested in Ghana, the country's Police Criminal Investigation Department said Saturday in a statement.

The suspects arrested Thursday morning in Accra, Ghana's capital during combined operations initiated by various security agencies were found in possession of large quantities of AK-47 assault rifles, grenades, pistols and ammunition, the Ghana News Agency quoted the statement as reporting.

All the weapons and ammunition were successfully retrieved during the operations which were aimed at hunting for a suspected warlord, only known as "Agaga," said the statement.

All the suspects are expected to be put before court as soon as possible, it added.

So far, the capital was reported to be calm with no roadblocks or large military presence.

Ghana, a former British colony, has suffered a number of coups since independence in 1957, but in recent times, it has remained stable in the turbulent West Africa.
