Sunday's masked robbery at the British airport which world leaders will be using for the G8 summit scheduled for July 6-8 is under police investigations, BBC reported Monday.
Three masked men walked into Prestwick Airport's cargo unit at about 10:55 am local time on Sunday and threatened a member of staff with a knife.
The group then drove off with computer equipment estimated to be worth a six-figure sum, said Lorna Hamilton, detective inspector of Ayr police office.
"The member of staff was uninjured but badly shaken as a result of the robbery. There is no description available of the suspects at this time," she added.
A huge security operation will be in place at Prestwick for the G8 meeting at Gleneagles in Perthshire from July 6. The airport has been chosen to be used by the G8 leaders to avoid disruptions from anti-capitalism protesters at the Gleneagles summit who would find it harder to get to than Glasgow or Edinburgh.
A spokesman with the airport said Sunday's incident appeared to be a robbery and not an aviation security incident.
"Our security arrangements are constantly under review and we will take advice from the police," he noted.
About 3,000 police will be deployed to guard the airport's 14- mile perimeter.
