Indonesia likely to dominate US prawn market: official

Indonesia is likely to dominate the US prawn market by year end, as Indonesia's prawn exporters get an incentive facility from the US government while those from the competitor countries do not, according to an official of the maritime and fisheries ministry.

Director General of Increasing Capacity and Marketing of the ministry, Sumpeno Putro, said Indonesian exporters need not pay an export bond for entering the US market, but other competitor countries including Thailand, Vietnam, India, Ecuador and Brazil must pay the money due to subjection of the US anti-dumping policy.

"This is a big opportunity, our competitors are now difficult to enter the US market. The export bond is huge," Sumpeno was quoted Monday by the Bisnis Indonesia daily as saying. He said that the US government had implemented export-import bond to countries which had been subjected to the US policy, adding Indonesia's product could be competitive in the US market, as it will not be imposed an additional fee caused by the bond.

He said this chance would continue up to the end of this year, as the countries were still facing the obstacle.
