Egypt strongly condemns desecration of Quran at US base

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit has strongly condemned the desecration of the Quran at the US military prison in Guantanamo, Cuba, the semi-official Al Ahram Arabic daily reported Monday.

"Egypt expects Washington to hold those responsible accountable," Abul Gheit was quoted as saying.

The Egyptian top diplomat added his country has informed the US government of its position on this issue.

In a report released last Friday, US Defense Ministry acknowledged there were incidents of desecration of Islam's holy book at the detention center for terrorist suspects.

The news has spared rounds of anti-US protests, sometimes riots, in the Middle East. As a result, scores of people died and hundreds more were injured in the protests.
