China and Belgium agreed on Monday in Beijing to promote dialogues and exchanges and boost friendly relations to a new height, during talks between Chinese President Hu Jintao and visiting Belgian King Albert II.

Hu said Sino-Belgian relations have maintained a good development momentum, indicating that the high-level exchanges of visits have been frequent in recent years. This has resulted in an increase in political trust and the expansion of the economic and trade cooperation.

He noted that the two countries have also maintained sound cooperation in other fields such as culture and education, as well as in dealing with the international affairs.

Hu expressed appreciation for the adherence of Belgium to the one-China policy, and its support on the Taiwan and Tibet issues.

"China attaches importance to relations with Belgium, and would like to promote political dialogues, economic and trade cooperation, as well as the exchanges in the biological, pharmaceutical, and micro-electronics fields with the country," he said.

Hu also called upon both sides to enhance consultation on reform of the United Nations, relations between China and the European Union, as well as other major international and regional issues.

King Albert II said he has come to China to further existing good relations between the two countries. He said that Belgium values the proposal of Hu to promote bilateral ties and would like to work with China to further the friendly cooperation.

He reaffirmed that Belgium will resolutely adhere to the one- China policy.

After the talks, the two sides signed a number of documents including a few on economic and trade cooperation. The two heads of state witnessed the signing ceremony.

Belgian King Albert II arrived in Beijing on Saturday morning for an eight-day state visit to China. It is the first China tour by a Belgian head of state in the past 24 years.
