Chinese police seizes 42 kg of "ice" in single case

Chinese police cracked a major transnational "ice" production and smuggling case, arresting 12 suspects and capturing 42 kg of methamphetamine (ice) along with some other kinds of narcotics and chemicals, the Ministry of Public Security announced Tuesday in Beijing.

"This is the largest methamphetamine production and smuggling ring Chinese police have busted this year, and it is also the first drug case involving 'ice' directly extracted from mahuang ( herb ephedra)," said Liu Yuejin, deputy director of the narcotics control bureau with the MPS.

On April 20, Chinese police discovered an underground 'ice' processing factory in Fuyang, a city in Anhui province. After more than a month of investigation, local police found that a domestic suspect named Liu Feng was colluding with Burmese drug dealers, who provided drug production technologies and experts to produce the drug.

On June 5, provincial police forces from Anhui, Hubei, Henan, Guangdong, Yunnan, Hunan, led by the MPS, seized 12 suspects, 42 kg of methamphetamine, 6 kg caffeine, 100 grams of heroin and 10 tons of the herb ephedra.

The case is still under investigation.

China declared a "People's War on Drugs" in April, appealing to the public to inform on traffickers and to help addicts reform.

According to the MPS, Chinese police arrested 67,000 people on drug charges last year and seized 10.8 tons of heroin and 2.7 tons of methamphetamine.
