Attorneys, as specialized legal personnel, are entering every aspect of social life. Data show that currently Chinese attorneys have numbered more than 114,000 and there are 11,691 law offices. Lawyers handle over 1.5 million legal cases and over 800,000 non-legal action cases a year.

According to statistics, people practicing law carry out 2.6 million cases of voluntary legal consultations and handle 103,000 legal aid cases a year.

Since 2002, China has launched the public defender and corporation lawyer experimental work, that is to say, appointing lawyers respectively in government offices and within enterprises to specially provide these offices and enterprises with legal services. At present, the country has 1,817 public defenders in 633 pilot government organizations and 733 corporation lawyers in 162 pilot enterprises.
