Chinese ambassador says six-party talks expected to resume in weeks

Chinese Ambassador Wang Guangya said Tuesday that the six-party talks on nuclear programs of Korean Peninsula are expected to resume in the next few weeks in Beijing.

Wang told reporters at UN headquarters in New York that all sides agree that the talks are "the best way" to resolve the nuclear issue.

It has been about a year since the last round of six-party talks was held in Beijing among the United States, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the Republic of Korea, China, Japan and Russia, Wang said.

"All sides are working to make sure the six-party talks would be resumed as soon as possible," Wang said, adding that he expected the talks will be resumed in the next couple of weeks.

Officials of the United States and the DPRK met in New York on Monday in a new effort to unblock stalled six-party talks.

US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said on Tuesday the DPRK has informed the United States it is willing to resume the six-party talks, but did not specify the a date for reopening the long-stalled talks.

The six-party talks was stalled in June last year as the DPRK accused the United States of adopting a hostile policy towards Pyongyang.
