Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remark at a meeting with Canadian Senate Speaker Daniel Hays.

Jia said the relations between China and Canada have developed smoothly over the past 35 years, adding, "The high-level visits between our two countries become frequent and economic cooperation expands fast."

The two countries have also kept good cooperation within the framework of many multilateral organizations including the United Nations and the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation and maintained close consultations on many key international and regional issues, he said.

Jia called for further exchanges between the CPPCC and the Canadian Senate, saying that such activities would help promote friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

Jia said China appreciated Canada for its consistent adherence to the one-China policy.

Hays said the relations between Canada and China have grown rapidly in recent years and fruitful results have been made in the fields of economy, technology and education.

During his visit, Hays said, he had fruitful dialogues with the Chinese side on the issues of common concern.

The Canadian Senate hopes to increase exchanges with the CPPCC so as to promote mutual understanding between the two peoples, he said.
