China "does not recognize dual nationality for any Chinese national" because the country cares the interests of the majority of overseas Chinese, said Chen Yujie, director of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, during her recent visit in Britain.
China decided that the country does not recognize dual nationality of any Chinese national was because that once the country recognizes it, all the Chinese that have settled in foreign countries will be confronted with a big question raised by the local society i.e. "Which country do they pay loyalty to, China or the one you are in?" It will be unfavorable to those in Southeast Asia who have been engaged mainly in commerce. Currently, 95 percent of all the overseas Chinese are living in Southeast Asia, and what the country cares is the interests of the majority overseas Chinese. Taking these into consideration, the country decided not to recognize dual nationality for Chinese national for the sake of the majority of the overseas compatriots.
According to Chen, who has been to Europe, America as well as Southeast Asia, a major difference between the Chinese living there is that only those in Europe and America would demand dual nationality while no such demand was made in Southeast Asia. She expressed understanding as for the wish of the overseas Chinese in Europe for dual nationality to facilitate their home going and reuniting with their families. However, in a long-term perspective, the decision made in this regard is reasonable and rational and completely in accordance with the International Law and the common practice in most countries. It is hoped that it can receive support from the overseas Chinese.
