font size

Chinese permanent representative in the United Nations (UN) Wang Guangya handed to the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on June 8 China's instrument of accession to the Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification Techniques (abbreviated as Environmental Modification Convention).

After the delivery, Wang said that the convention is an important component of the multilateral arms control system. Therefore, to enhance its universality and effectiveness bears positive significance for maintaining world peace and promoting human development.

China's accession to the convention further indicates that the Chinese government and people are committed to the continued development of the cause of multilateral arms control and to their firm promise of promoting world peace and prosperity, Wang added.

The Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification Techniques was adopted at the 31st UN General Assembly on December 10, 1976, opened for signature in Geneva on May 18, 1977 and entered into force on October 5, 1978.
