China repatriates criminal suspect to US

A criminal suspect of US nationality was repatriated to the United States under Chinese police escort Friday, which indicates further progress in bilateral cooperation on fighting transborder crimes, said an official with the Chinese Ministry of Public Security.

The official said that Chinese police received a note from the US Department of Homeland Security in August 2004 asking for help in tracking down the man suspected of bribing public officials and smuggling goods into the United States.

"To further promote cooperation in law enforcement, we have brought the man under control at the request of the US Department of Homeland Security and according to the Red Notice issued by the Interpol and other documents provided by the US," said the official.

He said this move shows that nowadays criminals cannot escape justice even if they flee to other countries.

China has been strengthening cooperation with foreign countries to seize criminals that have fled abroad, including notorious drug dealers and corrupt officials.

"Here I want to tell those people that no matter where you flee, you cannot escape the web of justice," he said.
