Viacom to split into two companies

Viacom Inc. announced Tuesday that its board had unanimously decided to split the media company into two separate entities, one focusing on broadcast television and the other on cable networks.

Based in New York, Viacom Inc. was one of the largest American media companies and owned CBS, MTV and Paramount Pictures.

Viacom CEO Sumner Redstone would be chairman and controlling shareholder of the new companies.
