Zheng Bijian: China is not a threat
font size

Zheng Bijian, Chairman of China Reform Forum, made a speech on June 13 on China's peaceful rise and the Sino-US Relations at the Asia Society in New York.

Zheng said China's rise and development in the first half of the 21st century is a great change both for China and the world. China never did and does not want to be a threat to anyone.

A luncheon party was held by the National Committee on US-China Relations at the Asia Society. Attending the meeting were about 20 experts in the Sino-US relations including former US Ambassador to China Winston Lord.

Zheng said China's rise faces three challenges and explained three corresponding strategies. As for the Sino-US relations, Zheng stressed that when handling the Sino-US relations in the globalization age, the US should transcend traditional ideologies and cultural superiority to create, together with China, common opportunities of cooperation.

Zheng said the purpose of his US visit is to promote the understanding between China and the US. Apart from making speeches, Zheng also met with the former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.

Zheng went on the visit at the invitation of former US President George Bush and the Washington Brookings Institution. The Brookings Institution also had a book published, which collects several of Zheng's important speeches in recent years.

Apart from activities in New York, Zheng will continue his visit to Washington and hold meeting with former US President George Bush. The delegation is expected to return to Beijing on June 22.
