HK container throughput up 1.8 percent in May

Hong Kong container ports handled a total of 1,866,000 containers in May, up 1.8 percent over a year earlier, the Port Development Council said Wednesday.

Taking the first five months of this year together, the container throughput went up 0.8 percent to 8,846,000 containers.

The Kwai Tsing Container Terminals recorded a throughput of 1,186,000 containers last month, a 4.9 percent increase over a year earlier. Nevertheless, the throughput of other terminals went down 3.2 percent, to 680,000 containers.

Taking the first five months together, the throughput of Kwai Tsing Container Terminals went up 11.3 percent over the same period last year, with 5,632,000 containers handled. Other terminals, however, recorded a 13.6 percent decline, with a throughput of 3,214,000 containers. Comparing with the April figures, the number of containers the Kwai Tsing Container Terminals handled in May grew about 1.5 percent, while other terminals saw a rise of 0.3 percent.
