China wants to boost ties with Saint Lucia: top legislator

China's top legislator Wu Bangguo told Saint Lucia's parliament leaders on June 15 that China wants to further boost its friendly relations with the Caribbean state.

Since establishing diplomatic relations in 1997, China and Saint Lucia have boosted bilateral relations with frequent high- level visits, increased political trust and good economic and trade cooperation, Wu said in a meeting with a Saint Lucia parliamentary delegation led by Senate President Hilford Deterville and Speaker of the House of Assembly Joseph Baden Allain.

Wu said the two countries also maintained consultation and cooperation in international and regional issues.

On parliamentary ties, Wu said he believed the visit of the Saint Lucia parliamentary delegation will help promote friendly ties between the two parliaments and the two peoples and push forward cooperation.

Wu also expressed China's appreciation to Saint Lucia for its adherence to the one-China policy and its opposition to Taiwan Independence.

Deterville said Saint Lucia and China enjoyed "close and solid" relations. He said Saint Lucia respects each country's sovereignty and firmly abides by the one-China policy.
