UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said on Thursday that the United States should cooperate with other nations to promote the UN reforms.
Annan told reporters at UN headquarters in New York that "it is encouraging that the US is joining with other member states to reform this organization, and make it as effective as it can."
"This is an organization of member states, large and small," he noted. "And the way we do business here is to discuss and come to an understanding -- a broad agreement -- and then move forward."
Annan called on the United States to put its proposals on the table and have a discussion with others.
"I think there are lots of proposals on the table now," he noted. "I would encourage the US to engage with the other member states and come up with a reform package for the organization, hopefully, when all the heads of state are here in September."
"I think that is the way to go about it," he stressed.
The US Institute for Peace task force on UN Reform released on Wednesday a final report, concluding that the United States has much to gain from a strong and effective United Nations.
