Arsenal striker Robin van Persie was charged with rape Thursday and ordered to be held in custody for14 more days.
The 21-year-old Van Persie has been in custody since his arrest on Monday over rape allegations filed with police over the weekend.
He appeared before an investigating judge Thursday and was formally charged. He will now be transferred to a prison while prosecutors build their case.
"I think my client is dealing with a lady who feels she wasn't treated with enough respect," Van Persie's lawyer Abraham Moszkowicz said.
Prosecution spokeswoman Jeichien de Graaff said the decision to keep Van Persie in custody "was based on the seriousness of the alleged offense and in the interests of the investigation."
Details of the allegations were not released by prosecutors.
