Singaporean man charged with murder of Chinese female worker

A 50-year-old Singaporean man was charged in the Subordinate Courts here Saturday with murder of a female Chinese national whose severed body was found in the Kallang River two days ago.

According to Channel NewsAsia report on Saturday, Leong Siew Chor, the victim's supervisor, was accused of killing 22-year-old Liu Hong Mei in his home in Geylang between June 15 and 16.

Leong was arrested early Friday morning, less than one day after Liu's body parts were discovered on the shores of the Kallang River in Southern Singapore.

Liu has been working in Singapore as a production operator in Agere Systems for more than two years and lived with her elder sister in a rented house.

The lower abdomen with upper half of her legs and the headless trunk with arms were found wrapped in plastic bags inside two cardboard boxes respectively on Thursday.

The police said that they are still searching for the remaining body parts, which had been thrown into the Singapore River, located to the southwest of the Kallang River, as Leong confessed.

The report said that the case will be heard again next Friday, and Leong could face death penalty if found guilty.
