M5.6 quake hits east Japan's Kanto region

An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale hit east Japan's Kanto region early Monday morning.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the 01:15 a.m. (1615 GMT) quake was registered with an intensity of 3 to 4 on the Japanese seismic scale of 7 in Tokyo and its neighboring prefectures.

The earthquake was strongly felt in Tokyo and other prefectures in east Japan.

No tsunami tidal wave warning was issued for the quake, the agency said, adding that the focus of the earthquake is about 50 km underground in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo.
