Donald Tsang, new chief executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), said in Beijing on June 24 that in the coming two years, the administration will work to maintain stability, promote social harmony and further economic development in Hong Kong.

Putting the interests of people first and promoting harmony, which is the basic policy of the state, shall also become the guide of future work of the administration, Tsang said at a press conference shortly after he was sworn in as the HKSAR new chief executive Friday.

He promised he will proceed in the direction agreed upon by various circles in Hong Kong, promote the implementation of various policies, improve the governing capability of the administration and develop a more efficient and straightforward work style.

Tsang said that consolidating and strengthening relations between the central government and the HKSAR is the fundamental precondition for Hong Kong's success, adding that it is also a fundamental consideration in the future work of the administration.

He said that for a long time, the central government has been very supportive of the development of Hong Kong. As chief executive, he and the administration will work in line with the macro-strategy of the state and make their own contributions, together with Hong Kong people, to the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Tsang thanked the central government for appointing him as the chief executive and pledged he will work whole-heartedly with Hong Kong people to face various challenges and overcome various difficulties to promote the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong and implement "one country, two systems" and "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong."

Tsang also briefed the reporters on his meetings with President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao.

According to Tsang, President Hu asked the HKSAR administration to further improve governance and work to foster a harmonious situation and advance economic development of Hong Kong. Premier Wen spoke of the current economic, social and political situations in Hong Kong. He expressed approval of the development mode of Hong Kong which is to become a regional financial center, and proposed giving maximum play to its role as a major platform for the mainland businesses to "go out."

The central authorities are acquainted with the various sides of Hong Kong, the circumstances of various strata and their considerations, said Tsang, adding that's a big encouragement for the HKSAR government.

He said that after returning to Hong Kong, he will convene a session of the Executive Council and appoint members to the Council and begin work immediately after that.
