A senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said in Beijing on June 24 perennial and concrete efforts should be made to push forward Party building and to make the CPC the forever strong leading core of China's reform, opening up and modernization drive.

Zeng Qinghong, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remark when he met with the full staff of a central supervisors team for an internal education campaign on keeping the vanguard character of the CPC members.

During the meeting, Zeng urged the team to summarize experiences in the first stage of the campaign and apply them in the second stage, which is about to begin, and the third stages.

Wu Guanzheng, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, and He Guoqiang, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and head of the central leading group of the educational campaign, also attended the meeting.

The campaign, which consists of three stages, began in January this year and is scheduled to last one and a half years. The first stage, which runs from January through June, involves Party organizations at or above county levels. The second stage, which runs from July through December, involves urban and township grass- root Party organizations. The third stage, which runs from January to June in 2006, involves Party organizations in the villages.

During the campaign, all the 69.6 million party members are asked to study important documents of the party to consolidate their political faith, find out shortcomings of themselves and other members around them and take steps to address these shortcomings.

Ordinary people will be invited to assess results of the campaign at various party organizations.

Zeng said the first stage of the campaign has gone smoothly and achieved marked results. The second stage of the campaign, which involves a wider range and heavy task, requires more determination and bigger efforts to make them fruitful and truly win approval of the masses.

Zeng called on Party members to concretely serve the people, be honesty and clean and contribute to the creative, cohesive, and combat forces of the party "so that our party will always be the strong leading core" in China's reform, opening up and socialist modernization.

Speaking in an earlier occasion, Zeng said the Party's organizations must make tangible progress in improving the quality of CPC members, strengthening grass-root units, serving people better and advancing work in various fields through the educational campaign.

In addition, the campaign should lead to the establishment of a permanent mechanism to ensure party members are educated

constantly over a long period of time and maintain their vanguard character, he said during an inspection tour.
