Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen left Phnom Penh Sunday morning for China to attend the second summit of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) countries at the invitation of Chinese counterpart Wen Jiabao.
Leaders from China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam will gather in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, on July 4-5, to discuss how to reinforce GMS cooperation and promote mutual prosperity.
The high-level delegation headed by Hun Sen include Foreign Minister Hor Namhong, Commerce Minister Cham Prasidh, Minister of Mines and Energy Suy Sem and Minister of Public Works and Transportation Sun Chan Thol and other senior government officials.
During the meeting, China and Cambodia will sign some documents on bilateral cooperation, according to Foreign Ministry's statement. Premier Hun Sen will also pay a visit to China's Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, and hold talks with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.
The GMS, also Known as the Lancang-Mekong subregion, covers China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. The first GMS summit was held in 2002 in Phnom Penh of Cambodia.
Under a mechanism for cooperation among GMS countries established by the Asian Development Bank in 1992, the six countries focus their cooperation on five strategic areas of infrastructure, trade and investment facilitation, participation of the private-owned enterprises, human resources and environmental protection.
With the theme of "a stronger GMS partnership for common prosperity," the participants of the summit will discuss topics including achievements and challenges, common guidelines governing future GMS cooperation, and the road ahead toward sustainable development.
The meeting will pass leaders' declarations, which reviews GMS ongoing programs and outlines cooperation in the future. Cooperative documents on transportation, information superhighway construction, power trade operation and animal epidemics prevention are also expected to be signed during the summit.
