Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo Saturday denied she was planning a cabinet revamp in order to make concessions to the opposition pushing for her resignation.
Last night, I met my cabinet and we all renewed our determination to stay on course on our key economic and social reform programs," she said in Manila. The Philippine Supreme Court Friday ordered a suspension of a new value-added tax law signed by Arroyo as one cornerstone law to implement economic reforms.
Meanwhile, Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye also denied there would be a cabinet reshuffle or replacements.
He said cabinet members only discussed how to mitigate the impact of the rising oil prices in the world market during their meeting Friday night. Bunye also dismissed speculations that there was a "loyalty check" because cabinet members'trust and confidence in President Arroyo the same after she admitted last week that she did talk to an election commission official during last year's presidential election.
He said news reports about an impending cabinet revamp were merely part of a disinformation campaign meant to show the government was already shaky and panicking to restore its credibility.
The reported revamp plan was supposedly geared at purging the Arroyo administration to get rid of non-performers and those associated with her husband, First Gentleman Jose Miguel "Mike" Arroyo.
The first gentleman left for Hong Kong Thursday and said he would go into exile to save his wife more troubles due to accusations that he was involved in the illegal gambling business, also known as jueteng here.
