font size

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, on Sunday for the upcoming second summit of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Economic Cooperation Program, slated for July 4 and 5.

Premier Wen will preside over the summit and deliver a keynote speech at its opening ceremony. He will also take part in an unprecedented dialogue between leaders and the business circle of the subregion, according to the organizing committee.

Laotian Prime Minister Boungnang Vorachit, Cambodian Prime Minister Hen Sun and Myanmar Prime Minister Than Shwe already arrived for the meeting earlier on Sunday. The prime ministers of Vietnam and Thailand are expected to arrive on Monday.

The GMS program was initiated by the Asian Development Bank in 1992 to promote the development of the Mekong River valley and cooperation between nations along the river. The first summit was held in Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia, in 2002.
