Sri Lankan Police and Army have arrested a man with two hand grenades in his possession from Sittandi area in east Sri Lanka's Batticaloa.

Military spokesman Brigadier R. M. Daya Ratnayake said Monday that the suspect named Tavarasah was a rebel of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

The arrest was made around 1.30 p.m. local time on Saturday.

The troops have taken the suspect into custody at an Army- Police security road block located in Sittandi general area, and the investigation was underway, he said.

Asked about the general security situation in the North-East Brigadier Ratnayake said that the situation was normal.
