font size

Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra arrived in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, on Monday morning for the second summit of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Economic Cooperation Program.

The Thai prime minister is the last of the six Asian heads of government attending the summit to arrive in the city.

Haruhiko Kuroda, president of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), has also arrived here.

Thaksin on Saturday concluded his official visit to China, which took place on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Thailand.

The second GMS summit is due to be held on Monday and Tuesday, with the participation of prime ministers of the six GMS member countries, namely Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

The GMS program was initiated by the ADB in 1992 to promote the development of the Mekong river valley and the cooperation between nations along the river. The first GMS summit was held in Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia in 2002.
