China cooperates with Vietnam in cracking down on woman, child abduction
font size

The police from China and Vietnam are participating as of July 1 in a two-month campaign against the rampant woman and child abduction on the border of the two nations.

The action was started just before the second summit of the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Economic Cooperation Program opened Monday in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province.

To jointly crack down on abduction is an important part of the subregion cooperation since its establishment in 1992, said police officer Xiong Jian from the Yunnan provincial public security department.

The action will mainly cover 12 counties and cities in Yunnan and south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region together with six cities and prefectures in Vietnam including Lang Son and Lai Chau.

The officer said the police from the two nations have already found some clues through two months of scouting, which will make the action more efficient.

Xiong said that apart from this sort of action, a long term and effective mechanism should also be built for the ultimate interests of children and women from both nations.

In the past five years China saved more than 1,000 abducted Vietnamese women.
