The Chinese government will fully consider environmental protection when tapping water resources in the Lancang-Mekong River, Wang Xiaolong, an official with China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in Kunming Tuesday.
The Chinese government is very clear about the concerns of the nations along the Mekong River and China has pledged to strengthen environmental protection in developing the Lancang-Mekong River, Wang said at a press conference held after the second summit of the Greater Mekong Sub-region.
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said at the close-door summit Tuesday morning that China's water programs at the Lancang-Mekong River will not exert adverse influence on countries at the Lower reaches of Mekong River.
All nations along the Lower Mekong River are not only neighbors, but also good partners of China and no solutions can not be reached through peaceful negotiation and talks, Wang said.
China takes environmental evaluation into consideration while the construction plan of each domestic dam project is on the drawing table, Wang said, adding environmental protection is a decisive factor in making the final decision.
