The People's Daily, China's leading newspaper, will run an editorial Wednesday, calling on the whole nation to make good use of resources to build an energy-saving society.
The editorial, titled Facilitating the Construction of Energy-Saving Society, urged the public to follow the notice issued by the State Council recently on saving power, water, material, land and making comprehensive use of energy resources.
China has scored a lot toward building an energy-saving society as its energy consumption per 10,000-yuan (1,204 dollars) GDP dropped by 45 percent from 1990 to 2004, the editorial said.
But it stressed that China's rapid economic growth still depends to a large extent on high resource consumption, and shortage of energy, fresh water, land and mineral resources is getting worse.
It said developing and saving resources should be both highlighted and the construction of an energy-saving society should center on raising energy use efficiency to ensure a sustainable socioeconomic development.
