Indonesia's second largest Muslim group Muhammadiyah Thursday named Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Secretary-General Din Syamsuddin as its new chairman replacing outgoing Syafii's Maarif.
"We agreed by acclamation to appoint Din Syamsuddin as new chairman. There was no voting," Muhammadiyah Vice Chairman Rosyad Sholeh was quoted by the Antara news agency as saying.
With some 20 million followers, Muhammadiyah has become the country's second largest Muslim group after the 40 million-strong Nahdlatul Ulama.
Unlike Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah focuses on rural development and education with little involvement in politics.
But some of its leaders become members of the House of Representatives representing other parties.
