Terror attack risk "moderate": HK Secretary for Security
font size

Hong Kong's Secretary for Security Ambrose Lee said Friday the latest assessment revealed the risk of a terrorist attack in Hong Kong is "moderate".

"I can assure the Hong Kong community that Hong Kong remains one of the safest cities in the world. Our assessment of the possibility of terrorist attack on Hong Kong is moderate," Lee said at a media press.

"But having said that, we cannot be complacent. We will remain vigilant," he said, adding that security measures have been strengthened in view of London's situation.

When asked about the security of the World Trade Organization Sixth Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong this December, Lee said the police will be able to handle the conference, which will draw thousands of attendants.

"This is quite a challenge for our Police department. But I have full confidence in the capability and experience of our police officers. And I think they can handle the situation well. I am pretty confident that the WTO meeting will be held successfully in Hong Kong," he said.

Up till now, there has been no report of any Hong Kong casualties in Thursday's bombings in London, Lee said.

Up to 9 o'clock Friday morning, the Hong Kong government has received 68 requests for assistance from Hong Kong families, most of these requests are asking to locate the whereabouts of their relatives in the United Kingdom. Altogether 27 of these families have already contacted their relatives so far.

Lee said the government is still liaising with the Chinese embassy.
