Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero called on Saturday for a UN-led global campaign against terrorism after his country and Britain suffered at the hands of the al-Qaida group.
In an article cited by the Spanish media, Rodriguez said terrorism has turned into a "global threat that needs a global response." He asked the United Nations to take control of the anti-terror fight with "total consensus."
Terrorism "could be defeated only through a collective effort of the international community," he said, adding that international cooperation is indispensable to security issues, based on better communication between secret services, police and justice.
He expressed sympathy with the victims of the July 7 bombings in London, which have left 50 people dead and 700 others injured.
Spain itself was targeted in a similar chain of terror attacks on March 11, 2004, when 192 people were killed and 1,500 others injured in Madrid train bombings.
