Bomb blast injures 20 in western Turkey
font size

A bomb explosion injured 20 people including two foreigners in the Aegean Sea tourist resort of Cesme in western Turkey on Sunday, semi-official Anatolia news agency reported.

The blast took place in a garbage container near a bank in Cesme town of the Izmir province, said the report, adding that the injured have been evacuated for medical treatment.

Izmir Health Department Director Dr. Levent Kidak was quoted as saying that one of the injured people was in critical condition.

"Fortunately, no one was killed in the explosion. Two of the injured are foreign tourists. Everything is under control. Teams continue their investigation," Izmir Governor Yusuf Ziya Goksu said, adding the explosion was caused by a cluster bomb.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack.

Izmir is expected to host the 23rd World Universiade on Aug. 11- 21.

Kurdish militants, leftist and Islamic groups are active in Turkey and have carried out bombing attacks in the past.

In November 2003, four suicide bombs hit British and Jewish targets in Turkey's largest city of Istanbul and killed more than 60 people.
